Rotary Club of Lahaina highway clean up

September 19th, 2009
Volunteers that assisted with Highway Clean Up! Rotary in action!

Special thank you to PP Nancy Montoya, Gregg Nelson, Don Russell, Pat Kelley, Angus McKelvey, and Eric Vak Ketel for helping with the Highway Clean Up.

In July, 2008, the Rotary Club of Lahaina joined with the Lahaina Sunrise Club to collect school supplies.  The two clubs distributed the supplies and donations to King Kamehameha III and Princess Nahienaena grade schools and Lahainaluna Intermediate School, and made a special distribution to three grade schools on Molokai in response to the economic difficulties on that island.

Also in July, the Lahaina club and Lahaina Bypass Now!  cleaned and painted the Rotary bus shelter in Lahaina town.

In August the Lahaina Club was a sponsor and participant in the Lahaina Cancer Walk.

August was also the first of four Highway Clean-up days on the section of Honoapiilani highway designated to the club.

In September the club was awarded a DSG to purchase books for the Lahaina Complex After-School Tutoring Project to use as rewards and incentives for students in the tutoring program.  The founders of the program were speakers at a weekly meeting and the Club presented them with $1,000.00 to support the program.

The Lahaina Club was the PIP for two DMG programs:   $1,200.00 for cafeteria upgrades for nurseries and schools in an impoverished area in Hungary, and $1,000.00 for Braille printers for a school for the blind in Tamil, India.

In October the Lahaina club distributed dictionaries to all the third grade students at Princess Nahienaena grade school.

The Lahaina Club was a sponsor and provided marshals for the Annual Keiki Halloween Parade in Lahaina Town.

The Lahaina club provided funding and volunteers for the Maui RYLA.

The Lahaina Club did food collection for the Maui Food Bank on November22, 2008 and December 13, 2008, and did another collection on April 25, 2009, as part of Rotary at Work Day.

The Lahaina Club (with Lahaina Sunrise) did Salvation Army bell ringing (with great success) on November 29 and December 20, 2008.

The Lahaina club had two successful fund raising events to provide college scholarships to seniors at Lahainaluna, Molokai and Lanai high schools, and awarded $35,000.00 in scholarships.
